The rules that govern your use of GiftKhata
GiftKhata is a free, open community project built by volunteers. No company, no subscription, no commercial motive.
These terms protect both you and the volunteer contributors from misuse. Written in plain language — no dense legal boilerplate.
01 Who this agreement is between
By using GiftKhata you agree to these terms. The other party is the group of volunteer contributors who built and maintain this app — not a company.
02 The service is free and provided as-is
GiftKhata is provided free of charge and "as is" — without any warranty. We're volunteers, not a company with a support team. The app may have bugs, go offline, or be discontinued at any time.
We will do our best to keep it running reliably, but we make no guarantees about uptime or continued availability. Please keep your own backups using the Export feature in Settings.
03 Your account
You sign in via Google, Apple, Facebook, or LinkedIn — we never store your password. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in account secure.
One account per person. You must be at least 13 years old to use GiftKhata. If you are under 18, please use it with a parent or guardian's awareness.
04 Your data
Everything you enter — gift records, event details, person names, family tree data — belongs to you. We claim no rights over it.
By using the app you give us permission to store and display your data back to you. That's the only purpose we use it for. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
You can export or delete your data at any time. On account deletion we remove everything within 30 days.
05 What you must not do
This is a community tool built in good faith. Please don't abuse it:
- Don't use the app to store or share illegal content
- Don't attempt to access other users' data
- Don't try to reverse-engineer, scrape, or attack the service
- Don't use automated bots or scripts to interact with the app
- Don't use the app for commercial purposes without talking to us first
- Don't impersonate someone else
Misuse will result in account termination. Serious misuse may be reported to relevant authorities under the IT Act, 2000.
06 No liability
We are volunteers, not a company. To the maximum extent permitted by law:
- We are not liable for data loss — please export your data regularly
- We are not liable for service interruptions or downtime
- We are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss
- Our total liability is capped at ₹0 since the service is free
Nothing here limits liability for fraud, gross negligence, or anything that cannot be excluded under Indian law.
07 Intellectual property
The app's code, design, and branding ("GiftKhata") belong to the volunteer contributors. Your data belongs to you.
The source code may be open-sourced in future — check the project repository for the current licence.
08 Changes to the app or these terms
We may update these terms or change/discontinue features at any time. For material changes we'll update the date at the top and notify you in-app where possible.
If we ever shut down the service, we will give at least 30 days notice and provide a data export before shutdown.
09 Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India. Any dispute that can't be resolved by talking to us should be referred to mediation before formal proceedings. Courts in India have jurisdiction.
